The guilt of going away without your family

Most women decide they want to go long before they decide they're allowed to.

Is it okay to go away without my husband and children?

Yes. A couple of nights away is not abandonment, and framing it that way is usually the guilt talking rather than an actual assessment. Your children will be looked after by people who love them. The version of you that comes home rested is worth more to your family than the two days you were gone.

I feel selfish even considering it.

That feeling is extremely common and it isn't evidence of anything. Almost every woman who goes says the same sentence beforehand. Consider that you'd tell a friend in your position to go without hesitating — the standard you're holding yourself to is one you don't apply to anyone else.

My husband works hard too. Is it fair to ask him to cover?

It's a fair thing to discuss rather than assume the answer to. Most husbands, asked directly, would rather manage a couple of days than watch their wife run on empty for another year. It also helps to frame it as a two-way arrangement — you cover something for him in return.

Who will manage the house while I'm gone?

Whoever is there. Practically: write down the non-obvious things — medication, pickup times, which child needs what — and then hand it over properly rather than managing remotely. The handover is the work. Once it's done, it's done. Things will be done differently, and differently is usually fine.

How do I tell my children I'm going away?

Simply and without apology, a few days ahead. Children take their cue from your tone — if you present it as normal, most treat it as normal. Tell them where you'll be, who's looking after them, and when you're back. Avoid over-explaining or over-promising; it reads as anxiety and invites more.

What if my kids get upset?

Some do, briefly, usually at the moment you leave and rarely for long afterwards. It's worth knowing that a child being sad you're going is not the same as a child being harmed by you going. Short separations that end reliably are how children learn that you come back.

What if something happens while I'm away?

You're reachable and you can come home. That's genuinely the whole answer. Being two hours away is not being unreachable, and the scenarios that feel vivid at 2am are almost never the ones that occur. Leave your details with whoever's covering and let that be enough.

How long should I go for?

Two nights is the usual sweet spot. One night is mostly travel and you barely land before it's over. Two nights gives you a full day in the middle with nothing attached to it, which is where the actual rest happens — and it's short enough that the logistics at home stay simple.

How do I stop thinking about home once I'm there?

Expect the first several hours to be noisy — most women spend them mentally running the household from a distance. It passes, usually by the first evening. Not checking in constantly helps more than anything; every check-in restarts the clock on settling.
